About Finprinted

The catch, the print, the table.

Gyotaku turns a single moment on the water into a lifelong narrative. It begins with the strategy and heart of the hunt, where the angler acts as a temporary steward of one of the ocean's greatest treasures. When the line tightens, a story begins that deserves a more permanent home than a fading memory or a digital screen.

The transition from water to paper is where the craft takes hold. Using non-toxic traditional pigments, we capture the indexical truth of the fish, the exact serration of the scales and the unique sweep of the fins, without the environmental toll of traditional taxidermy.

Because the ink is safe and the process is gentle, the fish is perfectly preserved for the final act of the journey. To eat the fish after it has been honored on paper closes the loop: the ocean's bounty nourishes the mind through its beauty and the body through its sustenance, leaving a masterpiece on the wall and nothing wasted.

Your catch, honored on paper.

The catch, the print, the table

Every print begins as a real day on the water.

Gyotaku is the centuries-old Japanese art of nature printing. Non-toxic pigment is applied directly to the fish, paper is pressed over it by hand, and the result is an exact, life-size impression of that specific animal, down to individual scales and fin rays.

Never. The inks are non-toxic and the process is gentle, so the fish is cleaned and eaten after it is printed. The catch, the print, and the table are one continuous cycle. Nothing is discarded.

Yes. Custom catch commissions are the heart of what we do. Reach out before your trip and we will walk you through handling, chilling, and getting the fish to the studio so the print comes out clean.

Prints are sold unframed in the sizes listed on each piece, typically between 14" x 18" and 18" x 24". Custom sizes depend on the fish. Every print is made on heavyweight archival paper that is easy to frame with standard mats.

Everything is printed and packed in Centerport, NY. Ready-made prints ship within 3 to 5 business days. Custom commissions vary with the size of the catch and the studio queue, and we will give you a timeline before we begin.
